From the kkfit.com website…
Welcome to my website. This is simply an avenue through which I can share some things I have learned about health, fitness, nutrition, longevity and wellness as well as give you a portal to several resources that I find helpful.
I am constantly in the process of restructuring the pages and content so bear with me if some of seems a little incomplete. Hopefully it will be completed very shortly!

Spartan race!!! A tough but fun run, swim, scale, swerve and crawl through the canyons of Malibu. About 40 minutes for the 5K course that was most certainly all uphill! Check it out if this is your kind of thing…

The holiday season is upon us… so here we are, trying to balance between living life to the fullest and not doing too many things detrimental to our health. I suppose the key is to pick a few days/parties/events where you concede to enjoy yourself without guilt, and then just be relatively tame on the other days. It’s not the single few times that you indulge that lead to the holiday blues- it’s the chronic little concessions we make because, “oh…it’s the holidays.” Also remember it is tough to exercise off what we splurge on so don’t count on that. Additionally, watch out for the exercise induced splurge. If you burn energy your body is going to want to replace it, so having a big workout to give yourself some room for a party might lead to more indulgence than you would have normally had. If you stay aware, probably not a big deal. If not, well, I guess there’s always January 1st. So go out there and enjoy yourself without digging too big of a hole! Good luck to all and to all a good night…

Something to think about…as a general rule… The longer the shelf life of the foods you eat, the shorter YOUR shelf life will be.

I was listening to a podcast by Angelo Coppola called This Week in Paleo. It has a lot of great info and he does a good job of presenting all the news and notes from the world of paleo and health. He had a talk at the end by Joel Salatin, owner/operator of Polyface Farms in Virginia, who had a great quote… “If we devote ourselves to sacredness in our vocations, the world will rise to meet us.” Well said.

Don’t trust the government, it’s agencies, and associations or groups that have to follow their guidelines. There’s a lot that goes into what they tell the general public and recommend for us that is not necessarily in our best interest or even supported by research. It’s unfortunate but true. I found that I had to take my health into my own hands and do my own research and digging. I am glad I did because I found that conventional wisdom is anywhere from sort of accurate to dead wrong.
Step 1- Take responsibility for your own health. There are plenty of resources out there you can use to educate yourself. I will do my best to pass along things that I feel can help you on this journey. However, you don’t have to trust me either… this are just my opinions and thoughts that I have developed from my own journey and education. Take them into consideration but make your own decisions. Good luck!

The transformation is complete! I am officially embracing the primal/paleo/low-carb lifestyle! It has been over a year and a half of study to get me to this place and I couldn’t be happier or more passionate about it. The more I delved into nutrition, the more I was lead to the health benefits of this lifestyle. The paleo and primal approaches and all of their variations also include movement ideas and theory, while the low-carb approach is concerned only with nutrition. Since they all basically are after the same thing (insulin control) I can say I am on board with them all. Time will tell where I settle but it will likely be with the evolutionary/ancestral approach. Very fun stuff, I have been loving listening to podcasts whenever I get a chance and have just been bombarding myself with info. It is so exciting when you are into something and feel passionate about it.

Ran the Long Beach Half Marathon yesterday with my wife Katie. A great time (if you ignore the insane crowds)! We bettered our previous half marathon time by 6 1/2 minutes (30 seconds a mile) and felt good doing it. I used Vibram Five Fingers Bikila and felt great. Calves were a bit sore but they felt great to run in. I hadn’t run more than 6 miles in the Five Fingers before and wasn’t sure how it would go due to the lack of progression which I normally preach. But I am a naturalist so I thought, “why not?”

Turned 33 today! Have been feeling great and doing well. LIfe is good. I have been energized by my philosophical shift to the natural order of life. Getting back to basics. Move more, eat real food, live a sensory enriched life. I have come across a good resource recently in the form of podcasts on iTunes and have been listening to as many as possible. One of my favorites is Robb Wolf’s Paleo Solution podcasts. A great paleo perspective from a smart but down to earth source.

Been doing some philosophical shifting lately. I have always liked natural and evolutionary thought when it comes to life, health and fitness. The more I read, ponder and practice, the more dislike the way humans have “devolved.” Two particular books that I have connected with are The Primal Blueprint by Mark Sisson and Exuberant Animal by Frank Forencich. Both of these excellently capture the philosophy that I find myself more and more in tune with… live like we used to. The further we progress as a society the more we lose much of what we have been doing most of our existence. From movement to food, everything has moved away from our natural development as humans. We move less, eat more food that is less nutritious and are becoming more and more isolated from each other and nature. I have begun a quest to reverse this in my life and I hope others will see the benefit in living some of their life a little more naturally.

Today was the Kona Half Marathon! 13.1 miles in 2:12:35. Katie and I had a blast and ran well. We had some doubts along the way of training but we stuck with it and made it happen. Aloha!

Always look to have fun while you exercise, or look for fun things that are also exercise. Today for me that was going on a warrior dash training run and finding obstacles, followed by finding how high a band I could jump over.

Try as best you can to know what you are putting in your body. Do not take anything for granted. Primarily I am talking about food and medicine. Do your research and it will pay off. I came across an article today about energy bars that goes along this same line of thought.

We can always make ourselves better. At any moment we can decide to be better. No matter where you have been or where you are at, the next moment is up to you.
